1930s semi side 4m lead S

Why the lawn is often the sunniest spot you've got

Step a few metres up the garden from the house and the sun hangs around for longer. On a long 1930s semi plot in Hall Green or Acocks Green, the middle of the lawn often sees sun from late morning right through to teatime.

Two panels side by side make a strip about 3.7m long and 1.2m deep. Put it where the sun lands, and have an outdoor socket within the 4m lead. If the best spot is further up the garden, an electrician can fit a weatherproof socket near the panels.

What's in the box?

  • 2 × 445W TOPCon N-type panels (bifacial, glass-glass)
  • 1 × APsystems EZ1-M 800W microinverter
  • UK-made ground mounting stand
  • 4m AC connection cable and 2m DC extension cables

Ballast isn't in the box. Pick up the blocks from a builders' merchant.

Ballast or ground screws: which for your soil?

Ballast, for now. The maker's manual sets out dense concrete blocks of at least 18kg each on the frame's lower plates, on both sides: 2 where gusts can top 40mph, 5 above 60mph and 10 above 80mph.

Ground screws grip heavy ground well, and plenty of Birmingham gardens sit on clay. We're asking the maker whether they suit this frame. Until the maker says yes, we won't sell them or suggest them.

On clay, choose a firm, level patch and check the frame is still level after a long wet spell or a dry summer.

How long does set-up take?

Give it an afternoon and an extra pair of hands. Each panel weighs 25.5kg, so it's a two-person lift.

  1. Carry the box round the side and open it on the lawn.
  2. Build the frame on your level spot, following the maker's quick guide.
  3. Lift the panels on and connect them up as the guide shows.
  4. Add the blocks for your gust speed.
  5. Register free at myplugin.solar, then plug into your outdoor socket.

Our step-by-step set-up guide goes into each stage.

Before you order: tick these off

Run down these before you join the list. Can't tick one yet? A local electrician can sort the socket and the fuse box check, then you're good to go.

  • A level, sunny patch of about 3.7m × 1.2m on your lawn, patio or gravel.
  • A weatherproof outdoor socket within the kit's 4m lead. It plugs straight in: no extension leads, cable reels or adaptors.
  • Your fuse box needs modern RCD protection. Not sure? An electrician can check it, and fit an outdoor socket if you need one.
  • Renting, or leasehold? Get written permission from your landlord or freeholder before you buy.
  • A quick call to your home insurer before you set it up.
  • Register it free at myplugin.solar before you switch on. That lets National Grid Electricity Distribution, who run the network in Birmingham, know it's there.
  • One kit per household, and never used with a home battery.

Questions before you buy

What happens to the grass underneath?

It gets less light and rain under the frame, so it'll thin out over time. Lots of people lay gravel, bark or a few slabs under the frame and mow round the edge.

Which way should it face?

South is best, and south-east or south-west are good too. Aim the panels at the part of the sky where the sun spends most of the day over your garden.

Why two panels if only 800W goes in?

The two panels add up to 890W. The microinverter lets up to 799VA into your home, so in bright sun it tops out at the limit, and on duller days the extra panel power helps it get closer.

Do I need an electrician?

Not to set the kit up. You do need a weatherproof outdoor socket within 4m and modern RCD protection in your fuse box. If you haven't got those, an electrician can fit and check them.

Who do I tell about it?

Register the kit free at myplugin.solar before you first switch on. That tells National Grid Electricity Distribution, the network operator for Birmingham and the West Midlands. Let your home insurer know too.
